Family Vignettes
Some people leave the legacy of a collection, money or property. For others, legacies are comprised of memories, stories and traditions that are recorded and shared. Learn simple ways (using writing, photos and more) to share your personal or family legacy.
Whether you are looking back on a well-lived life, or simply want to capture the moments that make up your days, Family Vignettes is a resource for you.
What are Family Vignettes?
Family Vignettes are a "snapshot" of a meaningful moment in your life or the life of someone you love. These can take many forms: a recipe, heartfelt story for your scrapbook, an altar or photo display or the basis for a poem or essay. The point of a Family Vignette is to capture the essence of a meaningful memory.
Why tell family stories?
Family stories are our legacy, our future. They reside within us, whether we acknowledge the or not. Telling family stories is healing, enriching and may strengthen future generations. In fact, researchers have determined that "children who have the most self-confidence have...a strong 'intergenerational self.' They know they belong to something bigger than themselves." (Bruce Feiler, see below for link to full article)
To read more about the power of family stories, I recommend these articles, the second one of which deals with family stories that are difficult to tell.
The Stories that Bind Us, Bruce Feiler, NY Times, March 2013
When Family Stories are Difficult to Tell, KJ Dell'Antonia, NY Times, March 2013
How does the process work?
Each week for four weeks, you will receive an inspiring email booklet that will encourage you to think deeply about family stories and create a
family vignette—a snapshot of a meaningful moment in your life or the life of someone you love. Using a combination of
writing, visual activities and the senses, we will draw out and capture your most precious memories. Each weekly prompt will come with creative ideas for how you might use the memories you uncover. Finally, during the four weeks, you will have access to our a private page where you can share ideas, inspiration and encouragement with fellow Family Vignette travelers.
In addition to the main prompt, each of the thirty days, you will also receive a fun, single-word prompt on the same theme. The mini prompts will keep your ideas in the forefront and inspire fresh recollections.
