Yesterday I had a wonderful Facebook exchange with my mother-in-law's cousin in Buenos Aires. (I'm not sure I can accurately describe our relationship.) How wonderful to be able to exchange ideas with a relative halfway around the world! While my Spanish is only basic, with my husband and daughter's help, I was able to understand most of his ideas and to communicate many of mine.
We share an interest in Jewish history. Ricardo's father found himself in Argentina while his uncle (my husband's grandfather), landed in North America. While the brothers were separated for many years and some members of the family died in pogroms and at the hands of the Nazis and Romanians, the families who left flourished in their respective homelands. I learned that Argentina is home to over 350,000 Jews of both Sephardic and Ashkenazi descent. Ricardo's wife's family are from Morocco.
Ricardo is proud of his beautiful homeland. I can only hope that sometime I can visit beautiful Buenos Aires.
